Landscape Design + Build

A design that can't be properly built isn't a successful design. At Plant Man, design and construction are handled as one project from the start, not handed off between separate vendors: the same thinking behind a landscape's composition is what makes sure it can actually be built and will hold up. This is custom landscape design and construction, sometimes called design-build landscaping: custom hardscaping and landscape construction planned and built by the same practice from the first idea to the last stone set.

Design + Build as One Practice

Landscape construction and hardscape design and construction are treated as one process here, not split into separate phases. Most landscape work gets split between a designer who draws a plan and a crew who builds whatever the drawing says, whether or not it's the right call once the excavator is on-site. Plant Man works the other way: design decisions get made and adjusted in the field, informed by what construction, grading, and horticulture actually require, the same approach that shaped the Unionville Waterfall Project, where the water feature's final layout came together as the land itself was being carved and graded.

Custom Hardscaping and Landscape Construction

Hardscaping is the structural and stonework side of a landscape: stonework, boulder work, patios, steps, retaining walls, drainage, grading, and site preparation, built to work together rather than sold as isolated line items. Natural stone and boulder placement are central to this practice: not a decorative add-on, but structural and visual work that has to be right the first time. The Unionville project alone involved roughly 120 tons of boulder in its waterfall and roughly 240 tons across the property, each piece placed intentionally rather than dropped in at random, with the sequencing planned so heavy equipment could still reach the site before finished areas went in. The same care applies to retaining walls, steps, and flagstone work throughout a project.

Site & Structural Work

Every project starts with the work nobody sees once it's finished: grading, drainage, irrigation, and site preparation. Getting this right is what determines whether a landscape still looks and functions correctly five or ten years later. Elton's own standard is that if the drainage isn't right, the fact that nobody will see it doesn't make it less important. This is foundational work on every Plant Man project, from a $20,000 feature to a multi-million-dollar property.
